How to Write Better AI Prompts: A Simple 5-Part Formula
Vague questions get vague answers. Use this five-part prompt formula to get clearer, more useful results from any AI chatbot, with before-and-after examples.
The quality of an AI answer depends heavily on your question. Many people type a short, vague request and feel disappointed. The fix is not a secret trick. It is clear communication.
The 5-part formula
Think of giving instructions to a smart new assistant who knows nothing about your situation.
Role
Tell the AI who it should act as. For example, "You are an experienced career coach."
Context
Give the background. Who is this for? What is the situation? What do you already know or have tried?
Task
State exactly what you want done. Use clear action words, such as "write", "compare", "summarise", or "list".
Format
Say how you want the answer: a table, five bullet points, an email under 150 words, simple language for a 12-year-old.
Constraints and examples
Add limits such as tone, length, things to avoid, and if possible show an example of what good looks like.
Before and after
Weak prompt: "Write about exercise."
Strong prompt: "You are a friendly fitness coach. I am a 35-year-old office worker with no gym access and 20 minutes a day. Create a 4-week beginner plan using only bodyweight exercises. Show it as a table with days, exercises, and repetitions. Keep the language simple and add one safety tip per week."
The second prompt gets a plan you can actually use.
More techniques that work
- Ask it to ask you questions. Try "Before you answer, ask me up to five questions that would help you give a better answer."
- Work in steps. For big tasks, break them down: outline first, then each section.
- Iterate. The first answer is a draft. Say what to change: "Make it shorter and more casual."
- Give examples of your style. Paste a paragraph you wrote and say "Write in this style."
- Ask for alternatives. "Give me three different versions."
Mistakes to avoid
- Asking several unrelated things in one message.
- Assuming it remembers earlier details in a long conversation. Repeat key facts.
- Pasting private data, passwords, or confidential documents.
- Trusting the output without checking facts.
What most people miss
- Polite and clear beats clever. Long "magic prompts" from the internet are rarely better than a clear request with context.
- Show the reader, not only the topic. Say who the answer is for.
- You can also ask the AI to improve your prompt. Try "Rewrite my request to be clearer and more specific."
